Hyderabad: The development works in Secunderabad Cantonment have taken a backseat due to lack of funds. The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has to get dues to the tune of Rs 400 crore towards service charges from Military for extending various services.

The dues that stood at Rs 7.4 lakh in 1983 have accumulated and risen to Rs 400 crore. As per Section 109 of the Cantonment Act, 2006, the Army is to pay annual service charges to SCB for providing collective municipal services in the Cantonment where central and State government properties are situated.

Sources said this year the Ministry of Defence gave Rs 25 crore as service charges. SCB vice-president J Ramakrishna said, “Secunderabad is the biggest among the 60-odd cantonments in the country and has 4 lakh population. There are a number of civic works ranging from roads to water supply that need to be completed.”

The SCB duties include lighting, cleaning streets, drains, remove vegetation, secure and remove buildings that are harmful, regulate places for the disposal of the dead, altering and maintaining streets, culverts, bridges, causeways, markets, slaughter houses, latrines, drainage and sewerage works apart from a host of other civic works.

Recently, a delegation comprising board members visited Delhi and met the labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and Director General urging them to release dues at the earliest. Earlier in the month of July, Excise Minister T Padma Rao Goud too met the Labour Minister requesting him to resolve issues pertaining to Secunderabad Cantonment Board.
