Hyderabad: The State government has been putting more efforts in resolving the demands of Telangana Government Doctors Association (TGDA).

In support of their demands, the members of the TGDA had gone on strike in May and the government had sought three months to address the issues raised by the doctors. The major demand of the association is to increase the employees’ strength at Directorate of Health (DH) (Primary Health Centres), Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) and Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

If the government fills the vacancies as per the sanctioned strength, the doctors would get promotions which has been denied for the past 20 years. A doctor, who has joined as a Civil Assistant Surgeon (CAS) at DH, would retire as Joint Director or Director of Health in the normal course of promotions. But, the present scenario is totally different. Many of the Civil Assistant Surgeons are retiring only as Civil Surgeons as they did not get promotions due to non-filling up of vacant posts.

Another demand of the association is to hike the salaries of doctors at the DH since they get less salaries as the Pay Revision Commission (PRC) put the doctors in 22 grades. The doctors appealed to the government to reclassify them so that they would get increased salaries. Surprisingly, the doctors at TVVP do not have health card facility because their salaries were not linked with treasury. The TVVP doctors request the government to pay their salaries through treasury.

The then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had implemented UGC pay grades by clubbing Pay scale, Dearness Allowance (DA) and HRA (House Rent Allowance) and without any allowances for the doctors at DME. Now the doctors want implementation of UGC scale pay grades as per GO No 14 for university teachers that provides those allowances. Dr Pallam Praveen, National vice-president of government doctors association and president of TGDA told The Hans India that the government is actively considering their demands.

When contacted the Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare Department Vakati Karuna said some of the demands of TGDA are fulfilled and other demands were in the process. We are regularly conducting meetings with all the Heads of the Departments to resolve the issues as early as possible, she added.
