A Class VI student committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on Wednesday after her teacher and family reprimanded her for not completing the homework.

The victim, Shalini Shetty was studying in a private school in Pitlam at Nijamsagar. Shalini was always at the receiving end of beatings from her brother for homework while her teacher and parents chided her in the same regard.

Shalini's teacher threatened to take her to the school principal for not completing the homework on Wednesday. Frightened over the warning and depressed over her family's torture, Shalini doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze.

Hearing the screams, the neighbours alerted the parents who rushed the girl to a hospital in Sangareddy. Later, she was shifted to Gandhi Hospital but succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment.

Police recovered a suicide note from the kitchen which indicated Shalini mentioning her teacher and family members troubling her over homework which is the reason she is choosing to end her life.
