Hyderabad: In recent years, corporal punishment has become an everyday scenario in the city schools and Intermediate colleges. But most of these cases do not see the light of the day as parents compromise with the school or junior college managements. Moreover, some of the parents still believe that being a little harsh will help children to be disciplined.

In the light of the new video that has surfaced on the social networking two days ago, wherein a teacher of St. John Vianney High School (Lucknow) thrashed and slapped a Grade 3 student 40 times for just not responding during his roll-call. This incident has stunned people all over the country.

Speaking about the scenario in the city, Achyuta Rao, President of the Balala Hakkula Sangham, said, ``The education institute has become commercial in Hyderabad. The private schools are all about who will score the highest marks and how to make it a marketing strategy.

In order to achieve these senseless goals, the teachers opt for harsh punishments, like hitting, excess homework, and make them kneel down. They just make the students by heart the syllabus rather than explaining them the subject.” He also mentioned that the organisation alone has dealt with more than 200 cases of corporal punishments in the last two years.

``Ninety nine per cent of the parents do not even file a case because these punishments have become a part of the society. Unless and until the student is severely injured, parents are not coming forward,” he adds.

Over the years, numerous students in junior colleges in Twin-cities committed suicide fearing such punishments. ``Though corporal punishment is against the law, we still get complaints from parents regarding this. Some schools lock the student in a dark room in the name of discipline or they are physically abused.

But most of the time, the child does not reveal about this to his/her parents. If at all, the parents find any bruises on the kid they are momentarily angry with the faculty but later the management tries to compromise with the parents,” said Nagati Narayana, State-President of Telangana Parents Association.
