Hyderabad: For the first time after the formation of the Telangana State three years ago, the government has decided to set up the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) clinics in 14 districts. The Union Ministry of Health has given its nod to set up such clinics. The main objective of the clinics is to prevent and control chronic non-communicable diseases, especially cancer, diabetes, CVDs and paralytic stroke.

The NCDs would be set up at Warangal Urban, Warangal Rural, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Bhoopalapalli, Karimnagar, Siricilla, Jagityal and Peddapally, Rangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Sangareddy and Medak districts.

According to officials, all men and women- in the age group of 30 years and above will be screened annually for oral cancer, hypertension and diabetes. Similarly, women who are 30 years of age and above will be screened for cervical and breast cancer. For hypertension, (high blood pressure) and diabetes and for common cancer, the screening would be done once in
5 years.

The health department has trained the ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activist) who would visit house to house. They have been given a questioner regarding the diseases for survey. The survey report would be sent to the medical Camp officer. A medical camp for two villages would be held on a fixed day. High BP and Diabetes patients will be treated at Primary Health Centre (PHC) level. For High risk group treatment would be given at Sub-Centre level.

The suspected cases of cancers, the patients would be referred to MNJ Cancer Institute for Biopsy and further treatment. The screening programme in Jangaon and Peddapalli districts has already been completed and was still going on in Siddipet district. At the district hospitals, the diagnosis and management of cases of cardio-vascular Diseases, Diabetes, Stroke and Cancer (outpatient, inpatient and intensive Care) including emergency services particularly for Myocardial Infarction and Stroke would be done.

Dr Ch A Padmavathi, Additional Director, Non-Communicable Diseases said especially the cancer patients were visiting the hospitals at second and thirds stage of cancer. With the screening, we can detect the disease at early stage that would decrease the mortality rate and quality of life improves as well as life expectancy also.
