Hyderabad: With only a day left for Ganesh immersion, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials are yet to complete the construction of 90 per cent of the baby ponds at various places across the city. The civic body earlier decided to bring about 15 baby ponds into use for immersion, but managed to complete only 2 baby ponds.

According to GHMC official, the civic body decided to construct 20 baby ponds for Ganesh immersion. It was planned to spend Rs 21.01 crore for the project. However, the corporation had managed to finalise the tender process only for 14 lakes and finished the work at only two lakes including Neknampur and DurgamCheruvu. The delay in the work is due to apathy of ground level staff and there are also allegations that they were hand in glove with the private contractors.

When queried about the subject, Lake ProtectionOfficer Y Shekhar Reddy told The Hans India the GHMC has managed to complete the work at only two baby ponds near Neknampur and DurgamCheruvu.

He has said that the corporation has finalised tenders for 14 lakes from the proposed 20 and the work is in progress for another 12 baby ponds. He assured that the work at remaining baby ponds would be completed by Dasara for Bathukamma festival. He also said that the Ganesh immersion would be allowed at the baby ponds where the work is under progress.
