Secunderabad: There are norms that charging for parking vehicles at public places is illegal. But parking charges are being collected for parking vehicles at public places and the authorities concerned are not taking any action in this regard.

People visiting the shopping complexes, theatres and other private areas in Secunderabad are forced to pay parking fees between Rs 10 to Rs 20.

The contractors said that they have been collecting parking charges – Rs 10 for two wheelers and Rs 20 for four wheelers- for more than two decades. They have taken a contract from the complex management to run the parking area.

A manager of a private complex accepted that charging parking fees at the complex is illegal. He said that if they do not collect the charge from the visitors they would park the vehicle randomly and would cause inconveniences to others. He added that the parking revenue is used in maintenance of the building and to make payments to labourers.

A social activist Vijay Gopal said that there is no law which says that charging parking fees is legal. He said that the private complexes, theatres, shopping malls and other private agents are going against the rule and have been charging this for many years.

A visitor at shopping complex R Shalini said ``I am aware of the Act that says charging for parking in private areas is illegal, yet we have been paying for a long time.

Moreover, if I pay for parking I do not have to worry about the safety of vehicle as there is a worker available and responsible until I return”.
