Hyderabad: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State committee demanded that the government immediately release funds for interest waiver scheme of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and grant pensions to all those who applied under Abhaya Hastam Scheme (AHS). Party State secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram on Monday said there are 4,22,000 SHGs in the State with a membership of 50 lakh.

The SHGs had deposited to the tune of Rs 1,749 crore in the banks. Further, the SHGs are prompt in repayments unlike several corporate houses, which had defaulted repayments to the tune of crores of rupees. But, the government had failed to release funds for the last two years, as promised, to waive the interest on the loans availed by the SHGs from the banks, he said.

He said the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had announced to provide interest free loan of Rs 10 lakh for SHGs as part of its electoral manifesto. But, even after three years the government had not implemented its electoral promise, he criticised.

He said, government claims that the SHGs, as an organised group, represent women’s empowerment but, the government failed to release funds for interest waiver scheme. They demanded that the government immediately clear the pending dues and take steps to strengthen SHGs.
