Hyderabad: The Telangana government has taken strong objection to the inauguration of the Muchumarri Lift Irrigation Scheme (MLIS) by the Andhra Pradesh government.

The Telangana government found fault with AP for releasing water to the Muchumarri scheme when the water level in the Srisailam reservoir was just 813 feet. “Releasing water from the project to Handri Neeva and KC Canal by the neighbour is illegal,” the Telangana government said.

Though the project has been sanctioned in 2007 in the united Andhra Pradesh, no specific allocations from the assured waters was made to the Muchumarri project. The project has been taken up to utilise only flood waters. Water to Muchumarri should be released only after water level in the Srisailam reservoir reached 885 FRL (Full Reservoir Level), the TS irrigation officials said.

It is learnt that the State Special Chief Secretary (Irrigation) SK Joshi sent an official communication to his AP counterpart protesting against the AP government releasing water without addressing the drinking water crisis faced by Telangana.

Joshi in his letter said the Telangana government has been demanding release of 2 TMC of water to meet the drinking water needs in the fluoride-affected Nalgonda district but the AP government did not even bother to respond.

The TS irrigation officials told The Hans India that the drinking water crisis looms large as water stored in Udayasamudram would not last beyond two weeks. The Muchumarri project has been constructed with a capacity of 3,850 cusecs and all the flows would be diverted to KC Canal through 4 pumps and Handri Neeva through 8 pumps.

Officials pointed out that the telemetry station was also not installed to measure the utilization of water under the new project.

The TS government has been demanding Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to install telemetry system. Coming to know of the inauguration the project, a team of Telangana irrigation officials was deployed at the project site to ascertain inflows and outflows at the Muchumarri project in Kurnool district.

The government would submit a report to the KRMB on the exploitation of the Krishna river waters in Srisailam in the board meeting to be held on September 11 in Hyderabad.
