Hyderabad: The Department of Plastic Surgery of Osmania General Hospital successfully carried out a rare surgery on a 14-year-old girl relieving her from 3-month trauma.

The girl, who was brought to Osmania maternity hospital with excruciating pain, had been suffering for the past three months. The gynaecologist, who discovered that menstrual cycles had begun but there was no outlet for the blood, referred her to the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for corrective surgery.

Speaking to The Hans India, Dr Naga Prasad, Head of the Department of Burns and Reconstructive Surgery, said he had found a very rare congenital condition called ‘partially absent vagina’.

“Her vagina did not develop fully and there is no external opening. Because of this there was a huge collection of menstrual fluid and it was not coming out. The blood clot which was accumulating in the pelvis was causing pain to her,” he said.

Explaining the procedure of surgery, Dr Prasad said, “We created ‘neo vagina’ using skin graft from her right thigh supported by hollow acrylic mould, which would be removed later. We kept the patient under observation and she would be discharged in about three days.”

This type of surgery, he said, could cost Rs 4 lakh in a corporate hospital. Here at Osmania, the surgery was performed under Aarogyasri scheme.
