UoH to coach poor students for Civils
With a view to provide academic support to the students from the underprivileged sections to do well in competitive exams, University of Hyderabad (UoH) would provide coaching to the students of BC, SC, ST and minority communities for civils services examinations for the first time this year.

The university is aiming at the preliminary examinations of the Union Public Service Commission to be held in June next year. About 100 students will be given coaching to appear for the exams.
Though UoH has organised classes for students of underprivileged sections to attend competitive exams in the past, from this year onwards, it will put special focus on civil service examinations. The initiative has been taken on the directions of University Grants Commission (UGC).
The coaching programmes for the students who want to appear for the competitive exams have been disturbed in the recent past due to agitations in the university. Now, it wants to hold them regularly and streamline the system. University officials said the earlier coaching programmes were effective and helped the students to grab opportunities. Several alumni of the university landed in good jobs all over the country.
Speaking to The Hans India, programme coordinator and Head of Department of English of the university Prof Krishnaiah said the coaching would be given for three months, starting from October. He said classes would commence in October with a break in November and December for semester exams. They would be continued in January, February and March next year. He informed that expert faculty would be engaged in teaching and experienced teachers in the IAS academies would be picked up.
Coaching will be provided in six to seven subjects in which prelims exam would be held. The options being given by the students would be considered in finalising the subjects. Krishnaiah said the notification for the programme would be issued on September 29 and the university was expecting to get about 100 students out of the total strength for 5,000 enrolled for the programme.
The university focused on the research activities and mostly arts students would be benefitted with the civil services coaching programme, he said. The UGC has given about Rs 12 lakh for the programme and students who take the coaching would be provided with required material free of cost.
A mock test would be conducted for the students after the coaching programme to help them to have the experience of real exam. The university may consider providing further coaching to the students who pass the preliminary examinations.
