Secunderabad: Hyderabad’s twin, though altogether a different entity with its own culture and tradition and a tad different from that of the other side of the Hussainsagar, still shares some features of the historic city of Nizams. For those who come from outside for a visit or on a business trip, Secunderabad happens to be a perfect host with its affable and warm way of life. And it has its own places of significance, for those who are interested in travelling around.

Secunderabad forms the hub of all religious centres of Telangana and has an important role in the history of the State. And one such religious place which fills the air of Secunderabad with divinity has been standing still among the cheerful crowd of Secunderabad. It is Gurudwara Saheb Secunderabad, near the railway station, a major worshipping place for Sikh community.

Established in the year 1953 and renovated and reconstructed in 1973 by Sardar Jeet Singh Chhabra and Sardar Kesar Singh Saluja, Gurudwara Saheb Secunderabad forms the biggest source of attraction during the festival of ‘Baisakhi’. On this day the devotees who come to the Gurudwara are clad in yellow dresses, and exchange gifts and greetings. Not only this, on this day, special Prasad called ‘Kesari’ is distributed to whoever comes to the Gurudwara.

Apart from Baisakhi, the birthdays of all the ten gurus of Sikhism are celebrated in this Gurudwara. On these days, the Gurugranth Saheb is recited for 30 hours and ‘keertans’ are done throughout the day to invoke blessing for the devotees for prosperity and good health. When a wedding is scheduled to take place, the same process of reciting the Gurugranth Saheb for 30 hours is followed.

On a normal day, the Gurudwara offers food to its devotees twice a day in the form of ‘Langar’. Everybody is welcomed with open arms irrespective of any form of discrimination. Sardar Avtar Singh, general secretary of the Gurudwara told The Hans India, “At an average, the number of devotees who visit the Gurudwara and ‘Langar’ ranges between 300 and 500, we ensure that any devotee who comes to us with any kind of problem, we try to help them out with the remedies within our reach.”

Sardar Baldev Singh, president of the Gurudwara, told The Hans India, “We also run a charitable hospital where medicines are given free of cost to the poor people and we ensure that they get the required treatment done for their ailments”.
