Hyderabad: A sapling that was planted by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao two years ago as part of the Haritha Haram programme at Balaji Venkateshwara Swamy temple in Chilkur on the outskirts of the city has now grown into a full-fledged tree. The leaves and flowers of the tree are being used in the puja of Lord Balaji and for other rituals.

The Chief Minister had performed a special puja at Sri Venkateshwara temple in Chilkur along with his wife and planted a Sampangi (The Gold Flower, Champak) sapling in the temple premises. The aim of KCR was that saplings should be planted and protected in places of worships like churches, temples and mosques as well as in the forest lands, residential areas and other habitations. The CM had launched the Haritha Haram programme on July 3, 2015

Ever since the Chief Minister planted the sapling, the temple priests have ensured that it is watered regularly and they have taken care of the plant. The saplings planted by other Ministers and dignitaries that day have also become big trees. The entire temple premises with these trees has become a pleasant place adding to the ambience of the temple. The Forest Department officials are also helping these trees grow and bloom.

Chief Priest of Chilkur Balaji Temple Dr Rangarajan said that it was great feeling for them to use flowers and leaves in the archana from a sapling planted by the Chief Minister himself. He said a tree guard is provided for the ‘Sampangi’ tree. Since it was planted by the CM, even the devotees have a special respect to the tree and they are getting inspired. He said in response to the CM’s call, saplings were planted in several temples and other places of worship in the State. Rangarajan said the trees and plants in Chilkur were also spreading aroma all around.
