The department conducted raids after a photo of bread packet which was sold on October 4 and which had packing date as October 5 was viral on social media. But the legal metrology officials could not find the bread packed on October 5.

Hyderabad: One of the famous eateries in the city Karachi Bakery is known for its quality of food. It was raided by the officials of Legal Metrology department on Wednesday. The department conducted raids after a photo of bread packet which was sold on October 4 and which had packing date as October 5 was viral on social media. But the legal metrology officials could not find the bread packed on October 5.

According to package commodity rule 2011, a food packet should have manufacturers name, maximum permissible error, net quantity, packers name, price of the item and consumer care number.

RG Bhasker Reddy, district inspector from Legal Metrology department told The Hans India that the department has booked 18 cases against Karachi Bakery of which one case was booked on the unit at Moazzam Jahi Market, four against the branch at Narayanaguda, seven at the bakery Shaikpet and eight at Banjara Hills.

He also said that apart from 18 cases in city there are other 14 cases booked against Karachi Bakery in Rangareddy under Package Commodity Rule 2011. He also added that from April 2017 to August 2017 the department have filed 61 cases against grocery of which 44 cases were booked under Package Commodity Rule 2011 and 17 under weight loss.

Bhasker Reddy further said that they could not find the product which went viral on social media but found that the Karachi Bakery is selling some food items without name, address, rate, package date and consumer care address.

He also said that some food packets had rates inclusive of GST but is still been charged in bill and the food items which are imported, but do not have importers address.

Karachi Bakery which was set up in 1953, has now 17 branches across the city including Moazzam Jahi Market. Out the 17 branches the legal metrology officials conducted raids in four branches at Moazzam Jahi Market, Narayanaguda, Shaikpet and Banjara Hills, booked 18 cases against the Karachi Bakery.
