Hyderabad: The Minister for Information Technology KT Rama Rao wrote a letter to Union Minister for Communication Manoj Sinha requesting him to take steps to make broadband as utility in Indian societies. In his letter, he termed broadband as a ‘tool’ to bridge the gap between the privileged and underprivileged in our country.

Rama Rao stated that according to UN reports, a country’s GDP can increase with the growing network of broadband in the country, hence it is important to take this into consideration. Over the last few years, the broadband has become an important medium for citizens to exercise their rights, avail basic services and to get vital information.

Highlighting the problems for the implementation of the broadband connectivity problem and its misuse, he said that the challenges pertaining to this can be easily tackled with an active intervention from the government and assured that the State would do every bit to support this initiative.

The minister said that, the Telangana government supports TRAI’s recommendation at Telecom Commission meeting that mandates very building plan to have broadband cable duct and requested the Ministry of Urban Development to give similar directive to all the state governments to implement and make broadband as a utility.

Appreciating the Central Government's BharatNet, he informed that the Telangana State has created Telangana Fiber Grid Corporation Limited to build a broadband network reaching every home, government office and institution.
