Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials could not start the land acquisition works for the construction of the much needed Balanagar flyover.

It may be recalled that the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao laid the foundation stone for the flyover at Balanagar from Kukatpally Y Junction to Bowenpally crossroads through Narsapur X Road in the month of August.

The six-lanes-two-way Balanagar flyover will have a provision of two lane one-way loop ramps on either approach of flyover for the traffic to turn to the right from the flyover.

The width of the flyover is 24 metres with the length of 1.9 km at an estimated project cost of Rs 387 crore. Sources in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) said that out of Rs 265 crore for land acquisition works, Rs 25 crore has been released to GHMC but the civic body has not taken up land acquisition. As a result, it cannot go ahead with the construction of flyover, they lamented.

A senior HMDA official said that the department has started soil testing work and has received a letter from the police department for the diversion of routes.

He said that the construction would be taken up after the land acquisition process was completed as 33,176 square metres of land has still to be acquired.

Repeated attempts to contact the GHMC official concerned proved futile.
