Commuters face hardships as rains sweep garbage on to main road

Hyderabad: The Patel Nagar area that falls between Film Nagar and Shaikpet has become a dump yard for the locals. And rains have worsened the situation, as the rainwater sweeps garbage and construction waste from the high-lying areas on to the main road, which is causing inconvenience to the commuters.

The residents claim that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) clears the roads immediately; but there is no permanent solution, as the main road is filled with debris every time it rains heavily. ``People from other localities also throw garbage here and the stench is unbearable. The GHMC has facilitated the area with two dustbins but everyday there is heaps of garbage and locals rarely use the bins,” said K Surekha, a resident of Patel Nagar.

Another resident said, `due to the continuous rainfall since a couple of days, the construction debris from the high-lying areas is washed on to the roads down here. This creates traffic congestion and it becomes a nuisance for us.’ The daily commuters are also unhappy with the road condition; “I’m now trying to avoid this route because of the pathetic state of the road that is filled with garbage.

Daily I notice huge pile of garbage on the side of this road and the garbage has never been cleared,” said Hema Latha, a regular commuter. When queried about the situation, N Ravi Kiran, Additional Commissioner GHMC (Health and Sanitation), said, ``We cleared all the waste instantly to avoid any inconvenience. The problem will be resolved once the Rs 15 crore project of SinarValley-–Film Nagar to Shaikpet Road is completed.”
