Hyderabad: Two flood gates of the Srisailam projects were lifted on Thursday to let out 56,000 cusecs of flood water. The Srisailam project outflow will add to the inflows of the water-starved Nagarjuna Sagar dam within 24 hours.

The Srisailam project is receiving inflow of 140,818 cusecs, while its water level touched 884.5 feet this morning as against the full reservoir level of 885 feet. The gross storage in the reservoir is 210 TMC of water as against the gross capacity of 213 TMC.

According to sources in the Irrigation Department, more number of gates could be lifted to let out 84,000 cusecs of water. Initially, water is being released through the power house channels, if the inflow continues to be more than the outflow, then Irrigation officials would be left with no other alternative than to release the water by lifting more number of flood gates.
The Srisailam project is full after a gap of three years and it is hoped that Nagarjunasagar project and its command area spread over Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam districts in Telangana and Krishna, Guntur and Prakasham in Andhra Pradesh will get inflow in the order of 74,614 cusecs. No water has been released from either of the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal or Right Canal for irrigation purpose so far this year. The Nagarjuna Sagar project level is still at 528.2 ft as against the Full Reservoir level of 590 ft.
