Hyderabad: The NALSAR University of Law and Pendekanti Law College jointly organised a two-day Telangana State-level seminar held at Pendekanti Law College on October 14 and 15 on “Consumer Law – Redressal Mechanism and Recent Developments”, sponsored by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

The seminar was inaugurated by Justice B N Rao Nalla, President Telangana State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. In his inaugural address he emphasised that the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 ‘is a special law over-riding all other laws in getting the redress of consumer disputes. It is a very important social welfare legislation concerning all citizens, as all are consumers in one way or the other’.

M Sreesha, Member, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, who was the guest of honour, stressed the need for strengthening all the consumer fora in the country. She highlighted the plight of the cinegoer’s interests as consumers as they are charged over and above the MRP prices while consuming eatables, like biscuits and mineral water, in cinema halls.

Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Vice-Chancellor, NALSAR University, in his welcome address, called upon consumers to be aware of their rights. P Ramamohan Rao, President, Vasavi Academy of Education, Hyderabad, presided. The other speakers included Prof. Asok R. Patil, Consumer Chair Professor, National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, Prof. K V S Sarma, Consumer Chair Professor, NALSAR University, and Prof. Y F Jayakmar, Principal, Pendekanti Law College.
