Hyderabad: Delay in the release of funds from State government has been the main reason for postponing nala widening works in the city. The civic body officials claimed that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has chalked out a plan to clear 47 critical nala bottlenecks with an estimated cost of Rs 230 crore prior to the onset of monsoon in order to avoid water-logging. But due to the delay in releasing funds, works have been stalled. As a result, several localities of the city have been inundated.
Widening of nalas has been there for the past two decades as the existing nalas get choked due to encroachments all along the drains. Several colonies have also come up gradually over the years. The civic body could not do anything to remove them due to political pressure.
A detailed project report was also prepared a decade ago to survey the primary, secondary and tertiary nalas, existing status and what is required to be done. The consultant reported that it required Rs 12,000 crore for remodelling of all nalas.
According to GHMC officials, the civic body had decided to clear 47 critical bottlenecks covering a distance of 365 km. The GHMC has conducted a comprehensive survey and identified as many as 1,000 unauthorised and authorised structures to be demolished. The civic has estimated Rs 230 crore towards both demolition and paying of compensation. However, the amount of Rs 230 crore was not sanctioned yet and it has been pending with the State government for the last several months.
When asked about the same, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India here on Sunday that even though the government has accorded administrative sanction, the civic body was yet to receive the amount.
He said that the proposed Rs 230 crore has been pending with the State Finance Department. He said that the issue has already been brought to notice of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao seeking his intervention.
