Hyderabad: Health Minister C Laxma Reddy on Sunday said for the first time in the country, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government was taking steps to conduct research on foetus problems and planning to establish special wings on foetus research in Gandhi and Niloufer hospitals.

Speaking after inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Feel the Foetus - Heal the Foetus’, Laxma Reddy said research scholars would be encouraged by giving fellowships. He exuded confidence that the research on foetuses would bring down the fatalities of unborn children.

He also stressed the need for preventing infanticide after birth which is alarming. “There is a need for conducting a thorough research on the issue to ensure that the rate infanticide comes down significantly,” he said.

The Minister said developed nations witnessed less number of mother and child deaths. Expressing concern over the lack of awareness among women and people leading to fatalities, he said the State government would soon take preventive steps.

It was time for creating awareness among pregnant women on infant health before birth and anaemia-related problems adding to their woes. Women were coming to hospitals in the last minute for treatment instead of early diagnosis and doctors’ advice, he said. The Minister said the government would support such research programmes on foetus-related problems and find a lasting solution.
