Vani & Veena full of life, celebrate 14th birthday
Little by little, Vani and Veena, the conjoined twins have learnt to come to terms with their condition, a slow-dawning realisation. This was the feeling that one got on their 14thbirthday which they celebrated at the state-run children’s home at Ameerpet. The girls looked cheerful and soaked in the goodies and presents.

One of the caretakers at the home said that these girls do not need sympathy and are doing well. Every three months they go in for a check up and they are fine. Safiya, superintendent of the children’s home said that senior cardiologist Srinivas Ravi of Gandhi hospital who did the check three months ago said that there was no problem and the girls are fine.
Vani likes math, Veena Telugu
A good dose of television, evening walks and lots of study is what keeps the twins occupied. Presently studying Class 7 material, the girls are quite good at studies and show a lot of interest. Speaking to The Hans India, their teacher Amisha says, “They are in no way inferior to kids of their age. While Vani likes math and grasps concepts easily, Veena is more adept with languages and Social Sciences and likes Telugu.”
Both like to watch cartoons and Veena is more accommodative when it comes to choice of television channels. Matron Shankaramma says, “Like any other siblings, they too have small fights and it is Veena who gives in, but both understand each other so well.”
It is the tenth month since they were brought to the children’s home from their previous stay for 11 years that was on the second floor of Niloufer hospital. The girls have acclimatised well with the surroundings and made friends with others at the home.
Know names of all politicians
Cartoons and news are most preferred by Vani and Veena. Once they get their fill by watching cartoons, they switch to news and can reel out names of almost every politician across parties. Abreast of political happenings, the girls keep a tab of the political firmament. Shankaramma says, “at times even we do not know the names of politicians and ask them.”
No talk of operation
The ordeal of the twins started in 2003 and several doctors from across the world were consulted that included Dr Keith Goh, neurosurgeon from East Shore hospital, Singapore, Dr David Dunaway and Dr Owese Jeelani from London and other doctors from AIIMS too examined the kids but there is a lot of risk and chance of survival is bleak and at least for now, the operation does not seem to happen.
