Hyderabad: A liquor outlet in the school zone and beside a religious place in BJR Nagar of Jubilee Hills seems to have invited the ire of locals as they have been protesting strongly against it. Women in the locality demanded the authorities to shift the shop to somewhere else.

Locals in the area complained that customers at the shop were harassing women in the vicinity. The shop was set up in the area a few weeks ago. The wine shop is located in a residential area. Locals alleged that women were not able to walk in this area in the evening since drunkards lay on the road or resorted to pass lewd comments on women passing from there.

G Padma, a Self-Help Group member, said, “The wine shop is built on the nala. The building owner constructed the shop in encroached land and he has recently moved abroad giving this for rent.” She said a group of women went to the Banjara Hills police station to lodge a complaint but in vain since police officials declined to register a case stating that the shop owner had the license from the authorities concerned.

P Hemalatha, a resident of the basti said, “Men come near our houses and urinate in front of the houses in an inebriated condition in front of the kids. Following the nuisance and ruckus created by alcoholics, vehicular movement is also disturbed. We requestthe officials that this shop be removed at the earliest.”

Another resident of the area, B Vijaya Lakshmi, said, “There are educational institutions and a church located in this area. Every day there is a fight on one or the other issue in this area. The area was peaceful before this wine shop came up here.”

Vijaya said they tried to approach the Hyderabad Collector but could not meet her so gave all the documents and related information to RDO Chandrakala. “We have been raising this issue for the past 20 days,” she added.

The Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) of Shaikpet, S Ramulu, said, “A few women came to us complaining about the wine shop and demanded closure of it. It was also brought to the notice of district authorities that owner of the building encroached the nala land.” “We have issued notice to the owner in this regard,”he added.
