Hyderabad: Although the State received bountiful rains this season, 153 mandals out of the total 584, are set to be declared as ‘drought-affected’ mandals this year.

According to the official data compiled by the State Disaster Management Authority in coordination with the State Agriculture Department, 139 mandals received excess rainfall, 292 normal and the remaining 153 got deficit rainfall.

All the mandals where deficit rainfall registered would be declared as drought-affected mandals by the State government soon. The rainfall data has been collected from June 1 to till the end of monsoon season on October 25.

A total of 17 mandals each in Mancheryal and Nizamabad districts, 14 each in Komaram Bheem and Jagtial, 12 each in Nirmal and Peddapalli, 9 each in Adilabad and Medak, 8 each in Jayashankar and Rajanna Siricilla districts, 5 in Vikarabad, 4 each in Karimnagar, Nagarkurnool and Suryapet, 3 each in Mahabubabad and Jangaon, 2 each in Kamareddy, Yadadri and Nalgonda and one each in Warangal (Rural), Warangal (Urban), Sangareddy and Khammam districts received deficit rainfall.

Zero deficit rainfall mandals were reported in Bhadradri, Siddipet, Medchal- Malkajigiri, Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Mahbubnagar, Jogulamba and Wanaparthi districts.

Once the mandals were announced as drought-affected, officials said the government would release funds for relief measures including 100 per cent subsidy on seeds to the farmers and supply of fodder free of cost.

The Rabi season has already begun in the 139 mandals where excess rainfall was reported. In the normal rainfall mandals, the Agriculture Department initiated measures to encourage farmers to go for cash crops and in excess rainfall areas, the farming community has been asked to sow paddy as the survival crops.
