The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change on Wednesday gave its approval in principle for the construction of Kaleshwaram project-Stage-1 by diverting 3,168 hectares of the forest land in eight different forest divisions to the project.

Hyderabad: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change on Wednesday gave its approval in principle for the construction of Kaleshwaram project-Stage-1 by diverting 3,168 hectares of the forest land in eight different forest divisions to the project.

The forest lands would be taken into possession by the state Irrigation department in Mahadevpur, Karimnagar, Sircilla, Siddipet, Yadadri, Medak, Nizamabad, Banswada and Nirmal divisions for the construction of canals, tunnels, lift system, surge pool, delivery cistern and reservoirs under the project in different districts of Telangana. In an official letter, the Union ministry communicated its approval to the state Ministry of Environment, Forests, Science and Technology.

The ministry instructed the state to take up compensatory afforestation over the non–forest land equal in the extent to the forest land being diverted within three years with effect from the issue of Stage-2 clearance and maintained that thereafter in accordance with the approval plan.

The non-forest land identified for raising compensatory afforestation should also be transferred and mutated in favour of the state Forest department.

The ministry also instructed the government on the civil structure recommended in the project advising that it should be designed in such a way to allow smooth passage of the wild animals.

The Forest department should prepare a plan of action to utilize the water potential available nearby for the forests and wild animals.
