Hyderabad: Despite heavy clamp down of the police, the Telangana Congress has put up a good show during it ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme on Friday, the first day of the Assembly’s monsoon session.

More than 1,000 party workers and leaders have been arrested at Gandhi Bhavan, party state headquarter, and at several parts of the city. The Congress claimed that nearly 50,000 have been arrested all over the state.

Telangana Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, MLA DK Aruna, leaders Anjankumar Yadav, T Karthik Reddy, M Sasidhar Reddy, MP Renuka Chowdary, MLC A Lalitha, former ministers Sabitha Reddy, Sunitha Laxma Reddy, former MLA Vishnuvardhan Reddy, former MP P Prabhakar, Woman Congress president N Sarada, former minister G Venkata Ramana Reddy, party spokespersons Mahesh Kumar, Sandhya Reddy and others were arrested.

As many as 1,000 Congress workers gathered at Gandhi Bhavan at 8.30 am and started the march towards the Assembly. Party senior leader S Jaipal Reddy attended the programme and extended his support. Congress workers were blocked at the Nampally Chourasta and arrested by the police. They were taken to Goshamahal police station.

The police erected barricades at the Nampally Chourastha and used rope barriers to stop the Congress workers from proceeding to the Assembly. Party workers who were coming from LB Nagar and Charminar directions were arrested.

The workers raised slogans against the government and demanded minimum support price to the farm produce. They resisted arrested, had quarrel with the police and they were forcibly pushed into the police vehicles.

Later, the Congress MLAs and MLCs, under the leadership of leader of the opposition K Jana Reddy, made a sit in before the Assembly, resenting the ruling party behavior in the Assembly. LoP Jana Reddy, PCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, CLP deputy leader M Bhatti Vikramarka, MLA J Geetha Reddy, party floor leader in Council Mohammad Shabbir Ali were arrested by the police.

Speaking to the media, after released by the police, CLP leader and leader of the opposition K Jana Reddy criticised the government for not allowing him to speak in the Assembly. He said that it was the privilege of the LoP to speak in the Assembly or in Parliament.

He said that the government even did not allow him to speak on the most important issue of the state. Jana Reddy likened the behaviour of the government with the erstwhile Nizam period.

Leader of the opposition in Council Mohammad Shabbir Ali said that they were forced to stage walkout as they were not allowed to speak on the farmers’ issue. He said that the attitude of the government has reminded a military rule.
