Frame policy to implement Telugu as compulsory subject in schools

Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Education Kadiyam Srihari presided over a meeting with senior officials of the School Education Department, Board of Intermediate Education (BIE), Department of Higher Education, Culture and Language, and the Official Language Commission on preparation of a roadmap for the implementation of Telugu language as compulsory subject from Class 1 to 12 in the State.
The meeting has been convened following a decision taken by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to make Telugu as a compulsory subject of study in all the schools in the State.
The Minister reviewed the present status of implementation of Telugu subject in various schools and held discussions on the preparation of an action plan for the implementation of the new proposal.
Srihari stressed that a new policy on how to implement the proposed move should be completed before the World Telugu Conference (WTC), which will be starting from December 15 this year so that the chief minister could announce the new policy during the WTC.
For this, a committee comprising Telugu University Vice-Chancellor Satyanarayana, Telangana Sahitya Academy Chairman Nandini Siddha Reddy, CM Special Officer D Srinivas, NCERT Director Satyanarayana Reddy, Education Department Official Vinayak was setup to prepare the draft the new policy.
The committee has been asked to submit its report by November 15, including proposals to make amendments needed to the existing laws.
Once the policy was finalised, then thenState government would bring necessary amendments and implement study of Telugu as a compulsory subject from the next academic year, starting from June 2018, the Minister said.
He asked the officials to ensure that the policy includes making the study of Telugu compulsory for all the students under the State, CBSE, ICSE syllabuses. Also, he said that study of Telugu as a subject will be made compulsory for the students studying in English and others language mediums in the State.
Srihari also stressed on printing books so that people from other states coming to study in Telangana could also easily learn Telugu language.
Special Chief Secretary Rajeev Ranjan Acharya, State Cultural Advisor Ramanachary, Official Language Commission, Chairman Devulapalli Prabhakar Rao, Telangana Sahitya Academy Chairman Nandini Siddha Reddy, Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) Secretary Ashok, Director of School Education Kishan, Director of State Department of Culture MamidiHarikrishna, PottiSriramulu Telugu University Vice-Chancellor Satyanarayana and others were present.
