Hyderabad: The police on Tuesday arrested Joicy Joyce and Rambabu for helping Safeer Karim, an IPS officer who allegedly resorted to cheating in the Civil Services Mains examination held in Chennai on Monday. The Tamil Nadu police headed by DCP P Aravindan took into custody both the accused from La Excellence (Civil Services Institute) at Ashok Nagar X Roads and obtained transit warrant from Nampally Court on Tuesday.

Prior to their arrest, they were grilled by the Tamil Nadu police (helped by the city police on ‘technical’ aspects). The questioning, which started in the morning continued till evening at the same institute by the officials led by Aravindan.

They grilled the duo based on the technical evidence which was seized at the examination hall. They also seized important documents, laptop, mobile phones and other gadgets which were used to help Karim. The police also recorded their statements during interrogation. “We are investigating the matter and seized some crucial evidence from the institute. Both the accused are being taken to Chennai after getting Transit Warrant,” said the DCP.

Safeer Karim, who was caught while copying in the exam in Chennai, allegedly used the latest technology including Bluetooth, darknet and a small camera. He resorted to malpractice with an intention to become an IAS officer. A 2015-batch IPS officer, who was assigned to Tamil Nadu cadre was keen to become an IAS officer by any means.

The technology used in this case is a camera worn on the shirt (not visible) is connected to a mobile phone via Bluetooth. It is used to take pictures of the question paper and the mobile phone transmits the photograph. A person on the other end of the line dictates the answers or the points, transmitted into small earpiece.

In the examination hall, Karim used micro camera (barely visible), which was connected to darknet. The camera helped scan the question paper, which was sent to his wife, operating from Hyderabad. The answers were replied orally by his wife which could be heard through a Bluetooth device placed in his ear.

Rambabu, director of La Excellence helped the women to operate from his facility. The police also questioned him, who is accused of providing her knowhow of the usage of technology. Karim and Rambabu are believed to be associates in business as they are partners in another IAS coaching centre in the name of La Excellence in Thiruvananthapuram.
