Hyderabad: Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Tuesday said that Centre giving hydrology clearance to Kaleshwaram project was testimony to the execution of irrigation projects by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

The Minister was replying to various supplementary questions on the Kaleshwaram project, which were raised by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) remember Putta Madhukar, who wanted to know the details of socio-economic conditions of the State after the rejuvenation of the Godavari river.

Harish Rao said the Centre had given hydrology clearance to Kaleshwaram project on Monday. He said the Central Water Commission wrote to the Union Water Resources Ministry stating that there was less availability of water at Tammidihatti and also clarified that there was availability of 280 tmc ft of water at Medigadda. This showed the Chief Minister was correct in redesigning the project and having the project at Medigadda.

He also said the government was hopeful that the Centre would have navigation facility across the Godavari River.

Harish Rao informed the Assembly that the Kaleshwaram project, which was being taken up as part of the State government's ambitious plans to revitalise and revive the utilisation of the Godavari waters, would help irrigate an additional 18.25 lakh acres of ayacut in the State.

Replying to a question, Harish Rao pointed out that it would also provide the water needs of 38,000 acres in Manthani constituency. Pointing out that the Godavari river flew 500 km in the State, the Minister said to make full use of the Godavari waters instead of allowing to flow into the sea, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had meticulously planned for over a year with the irrigation experts and had come out with the Kaleshwaram Project.

The Minister also said even Medipally project was conceived by Chandrashekar Rao and parts of projects that were being taken up in the Godavari basin. “These projects will not only help increase the fisheries industry, but also attract more tourists.

Because of the abundant availability of water, even it will attract more industries,” he explained and added that there was also scope for developing waterways.
