Hyderabad: Stung by frequent accidents in the recent times, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) decided to take measures including counselling of long distance bus drivers. Of late, there have been accidents in the State involving RTC buses leading to loss of human lives. The RTC claims to be number one in terms of low accident rate, with 0.07 per cent, among the other State transport undertakings in the country. However, as the number of accidents have gone up in the recent times, the Minister had to intervene and direct the officials to take up corrective measures.

Recently, three people were dead in a road accident where an RTC bus hit an auto in Alair in Yadadri District. Before that, on October 25, many were injured in an accident in Kusumanchi Mandal in Palair. The bus belonged to the Khammam RTC depot. A two-wheeler rider was killed when a RTC bus hit him during night time near Uppal Ring Road on October 28.

Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy told The Hans India that the RTC officials have been directed to take up corrective measures to avoid accidents. The Minister asked the officials to take up counselling for drivers at division levels at regular intervals. In an effort to avoid accidents, point to point monitoring of the vehicles especially during night time will being taken up.

A senior official said that the corporation takes up refresher courses for the drivers at its Transport Academy at Hakimpet. “If a bus is coming from Khammam to Hyderabad, the officials would check with the depot managers on the route over phone and informs them to guide the drivers to be alert,” the official said.

The official said that most of the accidents have been reported during the wee hours and added that even small corrective measures would help in bringing down the accident rate in the State.Apart from this, it is mandatory for the drivers to attend the refreshing course.

The drivers are given refreshing course once in a year, said the official. The Transport Minister directed the officials to ensure that there are no accidents because of driver’s fault. The official said that though there has been news about mishaps, the number of accidents have gone down in the recent years. The accident rate was 0.09 per cent in 2013 and now it is around 0.06 per cent, the official said.
