Hyderabad: In yet another positive response, the Central Water Commission (CWC) on Friday accorded inter-state clearance to the Telangana state government’s ambitious Kaleshwaram project. A week ago, the project got hydrological clearance from the Centre paving way to the speedy completion of the works. The TS government has set a goal to complete the project by 2018.
Taking into consideration the agreement entered with Maharashtra for the construction of Kaleshwaram on the Godavari river, the CWC gave its nod to inter-state project. As per the agreement, the Telangana state government would construct Tummidihatti project in the neighbouring state and another three barrages - Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla will be taken up in Telangana.
The Kaleshwaram project was marred into inter- state dispute as the Maharashtra government strongly objected the united Andhra Pradesh for taking up the Tummidihatti project at the height of 152 metres leaving many villages submerged in the neighbouring state.
After coming to power in new state, Telangana State Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao took an initiative and resolved amicably the inter- state problem with Maharashtra by reducing the submergence under the project.
For the optimum utilisation of water, Telangana proposed Medigadda barrage under Kaleshwaram and also conducted a scientific study by roping in big agencies to mitigate submergence.
Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said that the Chief Minister’s efforts were yielding positive results and the project would be completed in a stipulated time. The proposed new designs under Kaleshwaram would provide irrigation facility to 20 lakh acres in Telangana and stabilise another 18 lakh acres.
The two governments entered agreement for the project on August 23 last year in Mumbai, the minister said that the TS government redesigned Pranahitha- Chevella and named it after Kaleshwaram project being taken up at the cost of more than Rs 50,000 crore. The government also created Kaleshwaram Corporation to mobilise funds from the banks and complete the works on priority.
