Hyderabad: Immunotherapy can cure not only early stages of cancer, but also advanced stage of cancer, says, Dr Nori Dattatreyudu, renowned oncologist and Chief Scientific Advisor and Member, Trust Board, Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute. “Immunotherapy is treatment that uses certain parts of a person’s immune system to fight diseases such as cancer. This can be done in two ways, by stimulating own immune system to work smarter to attack cancer cells and giving immune system components, such as man-made immune system proteins,” he said. He was in Hyderabad on Saturday to attend as a guest of honour at International CME in Gynaecological Pathology.

Speaking to The Hans India, Dr Dattatreyudu said for the last few decades immunotherapy had become an important part of treating some types of cancer. Newer types of immune treatments were now being studied, and they would impact how we treat cancer in the future, he said, and added that immunotherapy had greatest potential in India. The immunotherapy was available in India, but it would cost more, he pointed out.

On cervical cancer, he said cervical cancer was more common in two Telugu States. “With the cervical cancer, as many as 200 women have been dying in India a day. It is sad to all of us. We can prevent it, we can detect it and we can cure it,” he said. He felt that there was lack of awareness about cervical cancer among women. The women, who were experiencing abnormal menstruation, should visit the doctor. Early detection of cervical cancer can be cured,he said.

To bring down the cervical cancer cases, Dr Dattatreyudu suggested that the government and private hospitals should come forward to detect the cancer earlier. For this, the government should bring a regulation that if any woman, who was admitted in hospital, before discharging a pap smear test should be conducted, he added. He advised the patients to go for second opinion, while opting for treatment for cancer as it is necessary. “Do not hesitate to ask question the doctor. If you have a doubt on why the doctor has opted the treatment and prescribed medicines,” he said.
