Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government will impress upon the Centre to declare the Medaram Jathara of Sammakka and Saralakka as a national event on par with the Kumbh Mela. Disclosing this in the Telangana Assembly, Minister for Finance Eatala Rajender, in a reply to a question on Monday, said the Medaram Jathara was one of the biggest events of the tribals and girijans in the world. The Jathara, which is organised every two years, attracts lakhs of girijans and tribals besides other devotees.

More than one crore devotees were expected to attend the Jathara to be held next year, the Minister pointed out. The Finance Minister also said that keeping in view the unprecedented number of visitors to the tribal fair, the State government had been taking all necessary measures in providing all facilities for the visitors like developing roads, providing toilets and other infrastructural facilities. In fact, realising the importance of the Jathara, the Central government had sanctioned an amount of Rs 5 crore to the State government for taking up various infrastructure facilities.
