Hyderabad: As many as 25 police officials in the Telangana Police Department had close links with the dreaded slain gangster Nayeem. The department had imposed various punishments on them for this. This was informed by Principal Secretary of Home Rajiv Trivedi to the High Court at Hyderabad in an affidavit filed pursuant to the court’s directive to this effect, while hearing a PIL petition filed by CPI leader K Narayana.

The affidavit informed the court that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the crimes of Nayeemuddin had identified 25 police officials as having had links with the gangster. The affidavit noted that the departmental punishments were apart from the SIT cases booked against these officers.

As per the details of the affidavit and documents enclosed, cases were booked by SIT against two Additional SPs, seven DSPs, 13 police inspectors, two head constables and a constable. Maddipati Srinivasa Rao and M Chandrasekhar are two Additional SPs who are now facing cases. Srinivasa Rao has already been placed under suspension.

Of the seven DSPs, two DSPs Chintamaneni Srinivas and Malineni Srinivasa Rao were placed under suspension. Three other DSPs, T Sai Manohar, Gonuguntla Prakash Rao and D Venkata Narasaiah were handed out major disciplinary action by the department. Two other DSPs, J Amarender Reddy and Thirupatanna were given minor punishments.

Similarly, action was taken against many other Inspectors and sub-inspectors named in the investigation. The affidavit refuted allegations that the probe had become tardy, and informed that the police had so far booked 237 cases against Nayeemuddin and his associates.

As many as 194 of them fall under the purview of Rachakonda Commissionerate alone. All those cases where charge-sheets were filed are awaiting trial. Also, eight politicians were found to be having links with the gangster and cases had been booked against them in Narsingi police station, he stated.
