Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Saturday stressed the need to formulate the new Panchayat Raj (PR) Act to suit the present conditions. At a review meeting on the proposed new PR Act with top officials at Pragathi Bhavan here, the Chief Minister said the situation now was different from the past when the existing Act was made. The new PR act should reflect the changing conditions.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Saturday stressed the need to formulate the new Panchayat Raj (PR) Act to suit the present conditions. At a review meeting on the proposed new PR Act with top officials at Pragathi Bhavan here, the Chief Minister said the situation now was different from the past when the existing Act was made. The new PR act should reflect the changing conditions.

Earlier, Panchayat institutions concentrated on providing drinking water. Now the State government took the responsibility of water supply under Mission Bhagiratha. Similarly, maintenance of roads, Public Health, tanks etc. were entrusted to respective departments.

The new responsibilities such as registering the births, deaths, marriages, maintaining the burial and cremation grounds, setting up of the dump yards were given to the Panchayats. The gram Panchayats have to functioning under the changed conditions. Hence there is a need to bring in a new Act which should stipulate the duties and responsibilities of the Panchayats, the Chief Minister explained.
