Hyderabad: For the first time, among the government-run hospitals in the State, the NIMS became the only institution which installed the most advanced Endoscopic Ultrasound equipment for both the Gastrointestinal and Pulmonary systems. It costs about Rs 2.25 crore.

Regarding the advantages of the equipment, Dr Ajit Kumar, Head of the Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) said it was a combination of endoscopic and ultra sound that the two image modalities were combined together.

When we passed the ultra sound probe in stomach, oesophagus and lungs, we could get great details of very small lesions also, he said and added that the doctors could get good diagnosis and know about the stage of the disease. “Depending upon the disease, we plan the surgical and non-surgical treatment. With this equipment we would avoid the surgery and perform therapeutic procedures,” he said.

Replying a question on how it could be benefiting the patient, he said the quality of treatment proved at affordable cost as compared to private sector. The doctors would suggest this test that has small tumours in the stomach, oesophagus, liver and in the abdomen. The equipment would go very close to the diseased and would give accurate diagnosis results.

By using this equipment, major surgeries could be avoided and simply go for day care procedure in 30 minutes, he said. Dr G K Paramjyothi, Professor in Pulmonary Medicine, NIMS said with Bronchoscopy we would see what was inside in the air way, but we could not see what was outside it.

“With this equipment we would see the outside tumours of air ways,” he said. The other advantage of the equipment is that the Intra Advanced Radial probe does biopsy without surgical procedure, he added.
