Hyderabad: Stating that Labour department with the help of Police officials had carried out Operation Smile to rescue and rehabilitate child labour, Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy said children working in hazardous occupations were rescued and admitted to government hostels and training centres of National Child Labour Project.

Answering the queries raised by TRS MLAs Vemula Veeresham and Dasyam Vinay Bhasker during Question Hour on Tuesday on the steps taken by the government on eradication of child labour, the Home Minister informed that the Labour department has been conducting workshops in this regard. He further added that District Project Societies have been formed under National Child Labour Project Scheme in all the districts to provide education and skill development to rescued children.

Naini informed that the Labour department has been conducting special drives and launching prosecutions against erring managements on the violations detected under Section 3 of Child Labour (P&R) Amendment Act, 2016 and also under Section 20 of Shops & Establishment Act, 1988.

The Minister added that during 2014 and 2016, the department had rescued 1,706 children and tried 1,085 erring managements. An amount of Rs 57,167 was imposed as fine on them. During ‘Operation Smile’, 8,874 children were rescued and rehabilitated, Naini informed.
