Hyderabad: The State will have a full-fledged state-of-the-art National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Hyderabad to combat epidemics, particularly viral diseases such as swine flu. The first such centre is in New Delhi.

An official of Health Department said the proposal to set up NCDC was long-pending since 2013. The then government had expressed its willingness to allot land at Shamshabad. But, the proposal did not materialise. Again in 2015 the government offered to allot land for the centre. The NCDC officials had inspected the Instituted of Preventive Medicine and Viral Laboratory at Fever Hospital. But the officials felt that it was not a suitable place as it is densely populated.

Later, the officials of the Health Department had offered to allot land at Nacharam. A two-member NCDC team inspected the government land and requested the State government to allot a three-acre plot to establish the centre. The officials said it would take one year to set up the centre. The NCDC officials decided to set up a temporary office in Hyderabad to monitor the progress of works.

Speaking to The Hans India, Dr Subbalakshmi, Joint Director, Epidemics, said, “We are forced to depend on the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and NCDC, New Delhi. When the NCDC centre is set up in Hyderabad, it will go a long way in detection of diseases.”
