Karimnagar: The under-staffed Police Department, which is struggling to cope with increasing crime, seems to have found a lasting solution, at least for the time being, in the form of drone, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
From stopping open defecation to finding clandestinely stored sand dumps, and what not the drone was not able to do.Since the introduction of drone camera surveillance in and around the city, especially on the corridors of Lower Manair Dam (LMD) reservoir, on October 4, there was a significant increase in the visitors’ footfall.
Hitherto fearing hooligans and open boozing, people not used to stay longer times, especially after the dusk, at the picturesque LMD precincts. But since the Commissioner of Police VB Kamalasan Reddy introduced drone surveillance, the LMD has come to life with visitors flocking in big numbers.
Close on the heels of the initiative, the authorities also launched Lake Police unit for the safety and security of the people visiting the dam and adjacent Ujwala Park and Deer Park.
Initially, the focus was on to make the LMD free from boozers, who used to settle with liquor bottles. Manning every nook and cranny is something a herculean task for the police, especially against the backdrop of staff crunch.
But with the help of drone camera pictures, the police were able to catch more than 600 persons, who were boozing in and around the dam, in last 50 days. All of them were counselled and produced before the court.
Despite the Swachh Bharat campaign, open defecation is rampant around the dam from the people of neighbouring colonies. It’s difficult to keep a vigil around the dam. It’s drone again. The pictures taken by drone have come in handy for the police in preventing open defecation around the dam which has been prevalent for a long time. Later, police made open defecators feel shy by showing them the visuals.
It may be noted here that recently drone camera visuals caught hold of an illegal sand dump clandestinely covered by haystack near Khajipur.
Speaking to The Hans India, the Commissioner of Police VB Kamalasan Reddy said: “Our effort is to keep the LMD precincts clean so that locals and the tourists can enjoy. The safety and security of the visitors is paramount to us.” With the aerial patrolling proving to be successful, we have added two more drones which can hover at a height of 500 meters covering a radius of around 5 kilometres from the control point.
Drone surveillance along with CCTV camera monitoring gives us a performance edge, he added.“Now the dam precincts look clean, importantly no mischief-mongers,” V Mamatha, a homemaker, said, thanking the police for creating a sense of safe and security feeling among the people.
