Hyderabad: The geo-tagging exercise taken up by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department has started yielding results as the officials identified over 16,500 new households/assessments, which were out of the property tax net until now in 72 urban local bodies (ULBs).

The department initiated the process of geo-tagging properties in 72 ULBs in the State as part of its mission to map all the assets in districts.

The department has taken support of the NRSC (National Remote Sensing Centre) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the purpose. The officials located the properties through the satellite images by using Bhuvan, a software application, which allows users to explore 2D/3D representation of the surface of the earth with highest resolution and provide content in local language.

As part of the ease of doing initiatives, the department took up geo-tagging of properties in the ULBs with an intension to generate more revenue and decided to have integrated land registry.

Sources said it was found that over 16,500 properties /assessments were out of tax net in the ULBs. Officials said this might be because of property owners not going for reassessment of their properties as per the changed assessment.

Sources said the officials were now in the process of segregating details such as domestic and commercial properties. Once the officials get an idea about the number of assessments under commercial and domestic, they would get a conclusion on the tax to be collected.

It is learnt that the department instructed the officials to calculate and get the tax details within 15 days since the third quarter of the financial year would be ending by December. Sources said there most of the unassessed assets were found in Nalgonda district with 2,084 properties and least were in Peddapally district with just 10 properties. Similarly, there were 1863 properties in Boduppal, 1,349 in Khammam and 1,655 in Warangal.

The other municipalities which had over 500 properties include Karimnagar, Jalpally, Palwancha. The ULBs with over 400 properties include Vikarabad, Badangpet, Korutla, Meerpet etc.
