Khammam: The district administration, which is on a mission to declare the district as open defecation-free by completing the construction works of Individual Sanitary Latrines (ISL) by December-end, has a hurricane task cut out for itself as it is yet to complete 40,000 toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission.

It may be recalled that the government handed over the responsibilities of construction of individual toilets to District and Rural Development Agency and to Rural Water Supply department. Of the sanctioned 55,988 toilets, the construction of about 17,000 toilets have been completed, while the construction works of about 8,000 toilets are under progress.

In a review meeting held on Friday, District Collector D S Lokesh Kumar ordered the officials to complete the construction of ISLs that are allotted to the district on war foot and reach the deadline. He directed the mandal-level officers to take the help of Tahsildars and police officials for completing the works by December-end to make the district open defecation-free.

Upon receiving the orders from District Collector, the Mandal Parishad Development Officers (MPDOs) of Kusumanchi Vidya Chandana, Nelakondapalli MPDO Alla Srinivas Reddy and Khammam Rural MPDO Ch Srinivas Rao conducted awareness meetings on the need for construction of ISLs by visiting every household in their villages concerned.

They even warned the villagers of action if they do not come forward towards construction of toilets and defecate openly in their villages besides not allowing them to avail any government welfare schemes and other benefits.

The MPDOs of Penuballi, Vemsoor and Sattupalli mandals Rai Vishwanath, B Govind Rao and N Ravi moving a step forward warned the villagers of cutting the tap and electricity connections along with cable TV connections if the villagers failed to construct toilets even after supplying the material for construction.

Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Marapaka Nagesh by visiting Kalloor and Raghunathapalem mandals directed the officials to speed up works by visiting every village and motivating people to take up toilet construction. Appreciating the efforts of MPDOs after inspecting the ongoing construction works of toilets in various mandals, District Panchayat Raj Officer Srinivas Reddy said that construction of toilets was must in every village to maintain health and hygiene.
