Hyderabad: The State of Telangana is all set to unveil the world’s second tallest statue in a seated posture. The 216-foot metallic statue of Viashnavite Saint Bhagawad Ramanujacharya, which would be called as ‘Statue of Equality, will come up on a sprawling 50-acre-space in the premises of Sri Sri Sri Tridandi Srimanarayana Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji’s ashram, located at Muchintal village, close to Rajiv Gandhi International airport on the outskirts of the city.

The first phase of the project comprising the main statue of Ramanujacharya, the ‘Parikrama’ and temple would be completed by March 2018. According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed in principle to unveil the statue in April. Sources also stated that, the total cost of the statue is Rs 100 crore which was taken up as a part of ‘Sahasrabdi’ (1000 years anniversary) celebrations of Ramanujacharya.

Saint Ramanujacharya was born in 1017 AD and went on to live for 120 years, propagating the Hindu philosophy of Vishistadwaita (qualified non-dualism).

He stood against any form of discrimination based on caste, creed, colour and religion and this is the reason why people in ashram have decided to name it as ‘Statue of Equality,’ the source said. “The statue would be made up of ‘Panchaloha’ (an alloy of five metals namely- gold, silver, brass, copper and tin/lead) and will be the second tallest statue in the world (the first one being the 302 foot statue of Gautama Buddha in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand),” the source said. The Airport Authority of India gave clearance for only 216 feet as the place was close to the airport. The statue would be positioned on a lotus built over three-storied 54 foot structure called ‘Bhadravedi’.

The statue was made by Aerosun Corporation in China and was shipped to Hyderabad in July. A team of 60 professionals were involved in making the statue.
