Hyderabad: Identification and recording the details of Chenchu Gudem and Tanda (hamlet) and other tribal villages in the forest areas could spark a new row between the Forest Department and the tribal population. According to sources in the Telangana State Forest Department (TSFD), a decision has been taken to put in place various measures to protect the forest cover in the State. As part of the move, the top bosses in the department had directed the district forest officials to take a slew of measures.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Monday, a senior official from the District Forest Department in Adilabad said that each district forest department already has the details of the tribal hamlets. However, the new measure would identify the location of the hamlets and villages with the geo-coordinates of latitude and longitude in the forest areas, he added.

However, the bone of contention between the tribal people and the department these days is that the tribal people are feeling restless following the State government’s decision to build trenches around the reserved forest areas to protect them. But, the tribal people are resisting the move alleging that it is meant to restrict their movement in and out of the forest areas in violation of their rights to collect the forest produce under the Forest Rights Act,” said another official from the Utnur division of the Adilabad district.

Against this backdrop, the field staff like beat and circle officers feel that going on a survey by physically visiting every hamlet and village to identify and record details of its location, extent, and population and fixing its geo-coordinates might further trigger suspicion among the tribal populace, he added.

However, “Though a decision has been taken, as it is a sensitive issue we will first gaze the reaction and response of the people and efforts will be made to convince them before visiting their areas to carry out the task,” said a circle official from the Achampet division of the Mahbubnagar district.

Predominantly, the department will have to carry out the task in Achampet mandal of Mahbubnagar district, Sirpur, Adilabad, Kinwat, and Boath, all villages under Utnur, Asaifabad, Lakshetipet, Rajurain Adilabad district, Mulug and Yellandu mandals of the Warangal district.

There are other tribal populations, but, “It is mostly the Chenchus with which the task would be a bit tougher.Because they confined themselves to the forest areas and refused to move out unlike some other tribal people and are also designated as the Primitive Tribal Group (PTGs) which need to be handled carefully by taking up their cooperation, the officials said.
