Hyderabad: The flagship double-bedroom scheme for the poor to lead a respectful life in Telangana was an impressive effort, said Union Minister for Housing and Urban Development Hardeep Puri. Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav and a team of officials accompanied the Union Minister during his to visit IDH Colony at New Bohiguda here on Tuesday. The Union Minister inspected the housing units and appreciated the Telangana government for its efforts to provide permanent shelter to the poor free of cost.

The Centre was planning to provide housing facility to all citizens by 2022, he stated. Efforts were on in that direction to provide housing to the poor, who needed to lead a respectful life like any others, Puri said. He also said it was a revolutionary decision to ensure that the city became free from slums and to provide housing facilities for the poor. Removing slums and dwellings of weaker sections was a major challenge for the governments, he opined.

However, efforts to provide double-bedroom housing to the poor was an ideal and inspirational step to other States in India, the Union Minister said. The plan of providing one lakh double-bedroom units in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits at 109 places was a tough task as it required the removal slum dwellers and basthis.

Out of 41 such places, the officials could evict families from 39 basthis for construction of housing units and the GHMC officials succeeded in their efforts, he said. Srinivas Yadav said like never before in India, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government had taken up the great scheme to provide permanent shelter to the poor. No other city had succeeded by removing slums to build housing facility, he said. State Government Advisor Ramachandra Naik, MP Bandaru Dattatreya, GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy and others were present.
