Hyderabad: Deputy floor leader of Congress in Telangana Legislative Council P Sudhakar Reddy on Friday urged the Centre to conduct Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) afresh on Polavaram project of Andhra Pradesh to protect historical Seetaramaswamy temple of Bhadrachalam in Khammam town, and about 200 villages from submergence.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, he said that Polavaram project is a National project and it is the responsibility of the Centre to protect the people from the adverse effects of the project.

He alleged that maximum flood discharge of the Polavaram project has been substantially changed from 36 lakhs cusecs to 50 lakhs cusecs per day. However, no study has been taken up on the impact of backwater of the project.

Andhra Pradesh has completed two major lift irrigation projects such as Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme and Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme as part of Polavaram project based on the new maximum discharge calculations.

This year itself about 110 TMCs of water has been lifted through pumps and supplied through Polavaram Right and Left Bank canals.
