Hyderabad: The Cyber Crime Police arrested a person, Vinay Babu of Nellore, on Friday at SR Nagar, for cheating public in the guise of selling goods at low prices on e-commerce portal, eBay.
Babu, who got used to lavish life, registered with the e-commerce portal as a seller and would regularly upload ads offering household electronic goods and gadgets at very low prices.
One Lt Col Piyush Berry lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police that on April 18, he visited eBay site with an intention to purchase air conditioners with a five-star rating for his newly-constructed house at Chandigarh.
He was attracted by the advertisement uploaded by Babu alias Ashok and spoke to him over phone. Babu assured the complainant to send four air conditioners at total cost of Rs 1.68 lakh. However, after some bargaining, Babu agreed to deliver the ACs at a cost of 1.60 lakh. Babu later told the complainant that he would send two ACs on payment and two ACs on Cash on Delivery option. The complainant agreed for that and made half of the payment through Paytm as directed.
When the complainant did not receive ACs, he again contacted Babu who gave him flimsy reasons for the delay. Days went on in vain. The complainant who grew suspicious reported the matter to the Cyber Crime Police.
The Investigating Officer KVM Prasad obtained the beneficiary particulars through Paytm and confirmed that Rs 60,000 was indeed deposited in the bank account of Vinay Babu being maintained at Bangalore.
The account was blocked and its account opening form was obtained. The police found out the tower locations of Vinay Babu in Bengaluru and headed to Bengaluru to nab him. However, Babu managed to escape.
Later, the police kept a close watch on his activities. On Friday, when the police found the tower locations of Babu at Kalyan Nagar in SR Nagar, Hyderabad, the Investigating Officer and his team caught hold of him and produced him before the court for judicial remand. The entire operation was monitored by Raghuvir, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police.
