The Telangana State government informed the High Court at Hyderabad that it would file an independent counter affidavit in the public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed seeking action against errant private corporate hospitals and strengthening of public health sector. This is a change from its earlier stance of adopting the counter affidavit filed by Telangana State Medical Council in this case.

Special Government Pleader S Sharat Kumar informed the division bench comprising of Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice M Ganga Rao on Monday that the Vigilance wing noticed certain irregularities in the private health sector and gave para-wise remarks to the contentions raised in the PIL petition.

He submitted that the government wished to bring the same on record before the court in the form of a counter affidavit and sought two weeks’ time to file the same.

The division bench was hearing a PIL filed by journalist Narender from Kazipet of Warangal seeking action against private hospitals indulging in unethical practices, apart from strengthening the public health sector. Noting that the response from Andhra Pradesh government was dismal, the bench earlier summoned AP Health Secretary Poonam Malakondaiah and sought to know the State’s response.

She appeared before the court on Monday and handed over to the court the counter affidavit filed by the State of AP. In the counter, she explained various steps the State is taking to strengthen the public health sector. The court dispensed with her presence for the subsequent hearings.
