Hyderabad: The World Lake Day is going to be celebrated on the banks of the Hussainsagar Lake at Tank Bund in the city on December 22. On that occasion, government departments, NGOs and tourism infrastructure developers will come together on a common platform to preserve and protect lakes and tank beds.

In this connection, the United Nations Organisation’s (UNO) has endorsed the international observance of ‘World Lakes Day’ proposed by ITS 6TH WOW, an NGO from India working for World Eco-Tourism in connection with United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This is the first of its kind in the history of India to propose. Telangana Tourism department is going to execute the formation festival of ‘World Lake Day’ along with 29 states and in 222 venues all over the globe.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Monday, Ravindrajith of ITS 6th WOW said the Lake Day which falls on the winter solstice and shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. He said the whole world was fighting against lake pollution individually in their respective nations for many years. “The awareness over lake’s protection and purification needs to be enhanced, to help stop polluting lakes, protecting our lakes, for now and for the next generations,” he added.

Answering a question on why Hyderabad is the appropriate venue, Ravindrajith said that there were as many as 117 million lakes worldwide and among these, 170 major lakes and lakhs of designated and undesignated lakes in India. In fact, around 45,000 lakes are being restored in Telangana, a first of its kind in the world, he said. “17 major lakes and numerous minor lakes in Hyderabad and Secunderabad competing with Udaipur now as the city of lakes in India.

On this occasion, Hussainsagar lake which is located in the heart of Hyderabad should be announced officially as the largest heart shaped lake in the world. Several lakes, tanks and reservoirs in the State such as Gandipet, Hussainsagar, Shamirpet, Laknavaram Lake, Ramappa Lake, Paler Reservoir and Kotpally

Reservoir are already popular as tourist hangouts. An extension to the list of lakes would be announced on this occasion, which would be recognised as UNWTO Lake Tourism Destinations like Hussainsagar for their uniqueness.
