Hyderabad: ‘VAHAN,’ a software, which has been unveiled by the Union government, can track down hit-and-run vehicle through a smart phone. ‘VAHAN’ is the national vehicle registry with a database of vehicles in the country.

The ‘VAHAN’ stores the data of the vehicles registered with the Road Transport Authorities (RTAs) across the country. According to the RTA officials, the national registry is the central repository of all crucial data. The national register would provide information to department of road transport, highway, RTO/DTO/MLO, inter-state check-posts, police and other government services. The official said the software would facilitate a nationwide search of the digitised data of registered vehicles.

The stakeholders can view the details of registered vehicles online based on the certain parameters like registration, engine number, chassis number, body type, fuel type, colour, name of the manufacturer and model of the vehicle.

The details of the vehicle can be checked on the website www.vahan.nic.in and also through SMS. The site has over 216,038,603 digitised vehicles and 108 stakeholders, including banks, insurance companies, manufacturers and transporters. The data of the vehicle can be checked by sending an SMS also. The user on his cell phone has to type VAHAN <Space> Vehicle Number and send it to 7738299899. The user would get the details of the vehicle on their phones.

Joint Transport Commissioner J Pandurang Naik said this initiative was taken by the Central government as part of the Digital India initiative. He said the VAHAN software would help in getting the details like the vehicle registered in which RTA office along with model, chassis, engine number etc. This would help track down a vehicle in the hit-and-run cases.
