Hyderabad: In the wake of the ongoing tussle between the Lambadas and other Schedule Tribe (ST) communities including Koya and Gutti regarding reservation, the State government puts a temporary hold on its effort to get the Centre’s nod for the increase in reservation of STs in education and employment.

The government had been demanding that the Centre increase the ST quota from the present 6 per cent to 12 per cent in proportionate to the population in Telangana. Government already adopted a resolution to increase reservation percentage and forwarded the same to the Centre six months ago for its consideration.

As per the official statistics, out of 32 lakh ST population, 25 lakh belong to Lambada community and nearly 7 lakh are from the aboriginal Koya and Gutti communities. While majority of the Lambadas settled in the non-tribal areas, the other tribal communities reside in agency areas of Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam districts.

Top sources in the State government told The Hans India that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao took serious note of the clashes between ST communities in availing reservation. The Chief Minister was holding a series of talks with officials and experts on Tribal issues to break the deadlock on the reservation issue.

“The Chief Minister sought a legal opinion on the possibility of categorisation of STs through an ordinance like the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government, which classified SCs in to four categories,” a senior official said and added that the government is yet to a take a decision in this regard.

The aboriginal tribes living in forest areas are demanding that the government put an immediate halt to extending reservation benefits to the Lambadas, who settled in non-tribal areas. They were also demanding categorisation of STs and reservations based on their population.

The Koya and Gutti tribes contend that Lambadas were exploiting the reservation facilities, depriving adivasis of any benefits.

State ST Welfare Department had been instructed to prepare a detailed report on the status of the living standards of all communities who come under ST category.

Officials said that the Chief Minister will hold a high-level meeting on the sensitive issue with the stakeholders before a taking a final call. Until then, the government will not move forward on the demand to increase the quota for ST communities.
